Carter Meadow Trail

The Carter Meadow Trail is a favorite trail for many. The observation deck provides a unique and expansive view of Maine’s second large peat bog system. The trail crosses several ecosystems, has lovely views of Little Birch stream as well as some native lore and Maine history.

Parking is maintained year round, hours are from sunrise to sunset. There is no fee to the public. The Carter Meadow trail begins with a smooth easy walk over a former logging road, hugging Little Birch stream to the right. You’ll pass some cabins, some are still occupied, so be respectful. After about a quarter of a mile the loop begins. The left or upper loop traverses a Pine and mixed fenn ecosystems leading to an observation overlooking Sunkhaze Stream which runs almost invisibly through the bog. The lower loop to the right also leads to the observation deck and follows Little Birch to the bog. This portion of trail may be wet in the spring or after periods of rain.

The refuge is open to hunting: wearing blaze orange year round is recommended. In the summer, dress prepared for bugs.
